Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one colour, an Olive-Green. Light Green.
Olivine, of which peridot is a type, is a common mineral in mafic and ultramafic rocks, and it is often found in lavas and in peridotite xenoliths of the mantle, which lavas carry to the surface; but gem quality peridot only occurs in a fraction of these settings. Peridots can be also found in meteorites.
Gemstone Fields Chudleigh Park
Chudleigh Park Gem Fields are 155 kl from Hughenden in north West Queensland, on the development road. There is signs that take you there. Dirt Road well looked after as it a highway. Having a 4 wheel drive is a good idea, some parts were rough. On the Map below you travel nearly to The Lynd, which has food,fuel,and camp grounds.
You can go from Charter Towers to The Lynd. It is and then the development road to Chudleigh Park Gem fields.
Finding Peridot at Chudleigh Park.
We smashed a few rock, to get our Peridot we found. They are light green glass chips in a big rock. I have a rock that I bought back, that looks like a bee hive, that has light green gems inside. Other rock are solid. People do dig to find Peridot.

No one should travel on dirt roads in the wet season. Only makes a mess of the roads and all cars that travel on them.
We went and had a look at Chudleigh Park in 2014 . We were told we had to get permission from the land holders before going to the Gem field location on the station. We made the long drive up to the homestead, to get permission, and there was only a worker there and he new nothing about Peridot Gems Fields.
We had a look at the Gem fields. Found a tiny piece of Peridot that we faceted, it into a 4mm Gemstone. Yes we will be back to find a big Peridot Gemstone.
Rang the Department of Mines and Energy.
2016 we made enquires at the Department of Mines and Energy in Charter Towers, about going to Chudleigh Park to fossick for Peridot Gem Stones. And we were told it was a no go area, as the department were in negotiation with the owners. So if you are interested in going, do make a phone call and find out. Some people don’t get permission, all they are doing is making it hard for the people that do the right thing.
In accordance with the Fossicking Act, the landowner of Chudleigh Park you have to get permission. Fossicking and Camping to continue at the Peridot Gems. You have to hold a Fossickers Licenses issued by the Department of Mines and Energy.
Camping At Chudleigh Park.
When we went to Chudleigh Park there was a few trees, lots of room to camp. There is nothing there, so you have to be self -sufficient, take plenty of water,and food. Extra fuel. & First Ad Kits .
